Course Description

SERP 502, Behavior Principles and Disability (Course 1) ensures that participants are knowledgeable about the basic behavioral principals and techniques of applied behavior analysis that are needed to complete effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function-based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).  Course 1 provides 3 credit hours/45 clock hours of instruction.

Specific competencies addressed in Course 1 include:

Defining Behavior

Stimulus Control
A-B-C Model          Measurement/Interobserver Agreement
Reinforcement   Recording Behavior
Differential Reinforcement Techniques Graphing
Punishment   Functional Analysis
Extinction  Generalization
Behavioral Intervention Plans Functional Behavioral Assessment

SERP 529A, Advanced Positive Behavioral Support (Course 2) provides advanced knowledge and skills in applied behavior analysis and the factors that affect the application of behavior principles within school settings.  Course 2 provides 3 credit hours/45 clock hours of instruction.  Participants complete an FBA, develop and test a function-based intervention, monitor, and make data-based decisions based on the effectiveness of the plan.

Specific competencies in Course 2 address the following areas with emphasis on how to assess deficits in these areas as part of the FBA and develop function-based interventions that remediate them:

Advanced FBA Development

Social Skills
Advanced BIP Implementation  School-Wide Positive Behavioral Support
Effective Instruction   Generalization Training
Classroom Routines and Organization Analysis of Setting Events
Treatment Integrity Social Validity
Ethical Issues

SERP 529B, Advanced Positive Behavior Support (B) (Course 3) provides each student continued opportunity to apply and develop skills and knowledge of course content within the context of their classroom, school, and district.  Course 3 provides 3 credit hours/45 clock hours of instruction.  In addition to completing 2 additional FBAs and developing, implementing and monitoring the function-based interventions, course participants learn about other factors that can affect implementation.  Competencies focus on:

Advanced Function-based Interventions Behavior De-escalation
Legal Issues   Monitoring Interventions
Data-Based Decision-Making   Teaming and Collaboration
Ethical Decision-Making   System Contingencies
Applications of Applied Behavior Analysis in Complex Community Environments

Upon completion of training, students earn the Behavioral Support Specialist Certificate that identifies them as having demonstrated competency in the development and implementation of FBA and function-based interventions.
