The D/HH Program at the U of A .....
The Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, and School Psychology (SERSP) at the University of Arizona supports a concentration in the preparation of graduate students who wish to become teachers of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH).Acceptance into the program is determined by an SERSP faculty committee which considers prior course work and grades, letters of recommendation, the candidates autobiographical sketch, long-term goals and prior work experience in schools and/or with individuals who are D/HH, and results of an interview with the D/HH program director.
The program is interdisciplinary within the University, utilizing faculty from several departments to provide students with appropriate core and elective course work: Special Education, Rehabilitation, and School Psychology, Teaching and Teacher Education, Speech and Hearing Sciences, Education and Language, Reading and Culture.
Time Requirements...
Ten to twelve students are accepted into the program each year and provided with intensive and comprehensive course work and practica over a two-year period, which includes four semesters and two 5-week summer sessions. The two year concentration allows faculty to provide a comprehensive curriculum focusing on the sequential development of critical skills that teachers must possess to meet the wide range of needs of children who are D/HH. The course work and practica are aimed at the development of professional knowledge and skills leading to Arizona and professional CED D/HH certification, and a Masters degree (M.A.) or Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) Some part-time students are accepted, and they must make arrangements for part-time internships during the school year, and a full-time internship during their final semester. During a student's graduate program one can also take advantage of the opportunity the Arizona School for the Deaf and the Blind offers in terms of lodging and work. At this link two of our former students share thoughts on living and working at ASDB.Graduates of the program are eligible for certification by the Council on Education of the Deaf (CED) Certification to teach in Arizona is granted after students have successfully completed the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessment (AEPA), and a course in U.S. and Arizona Constitution.
Areas of Concentration...
* Education of children who are D/HH who also have learning, behavior, intellectual, physical and/or multiple developmental challenges
* Public school inclusion for children who are D/HH
