Children's Literature Mini-Conference:
Exploring a Sense of Belonging through Literature with Ying Chang Compestine and Adam Rex
Free and Open to the Public

Ying Chang Compestine will open the conference by sharing her journey of writing her award-winning novel, Revolution is Not a Dinner Party, based on her experiences of growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution. She will talk about her career as a writer, shifting between Chinese and American cultures, the challenges of writing in her second language, and her writing process. Ying will close the conference by talking about her new book, A Banquet for Hungry Ghosts, with a slide show of the locations where the stories take place and her use of food as a metaphor, as well as tell some Chinese ghost stories!!

Adam Rex will share his process as an illustrator of picture books, particularly how he integrates references to popular culture into his books. His picture book, Frankstein Makes a Sandwich, a collection of stories about monsters and their problems, was a New York Times Bestseller. Other books include Pssst!, Frankenstein Takes the Cake, and The True Meaning of Smekday. Adam says he is near-sighted, bad at all sports, learning to play the theremin, and usually in need of a shave. He likes animals, spacemen, Mexican food, Ethiopian food, monsters, puppets, comin books, 19th century art, skeletons, bugs, and robots.

Another highlight of the mini-conference will be time to explore sets of books put together by LRC 480 preservice teachers around themes related to a sense of belonging. Ying and Adam will autograph and their books will be available for purchase.

2010 Tucson Festival of Books:
Over 50 sessions with presentations by authors and
illustrators for children and adolescents as well as an educator’s strand.

We are excited to announce that the Tucson Festival of Books on March 13-14, 2010 is offering professional development hours for teachers. You can attend sessions by well-known children’s authors and illustrators, such as Jon Sciezska, Mark Teague, Alma Flor Ada, Patricia McKissack, Frank Beddor, Lisa Yee, and Ying Chang Compestine. You can also attend a special educator’s strand with sessions on topics such as reading aloud effectively to kids, talking with kids about books, and establishing a strong independent reading program.

A form for professional development credit will be available at the Volunteer Booth in the lobby of the College of Education during the festival. Your form will be stamped at each session you attend. At the end of the day, return your form to certify your attendance.

Last year, over 50,000 people attended the festival and we expect an excellent turnout again this year. In addition to the sessions focused on authors and illustrators for children and teens, there will be hundreds of other sessions by authors who write a wide range of genres for adults. There are also booths and activity tents, entertainment stages, a circus for children, and many more exciting events throughout the festival. The festival is in the central mall at the University of Arizona with the children’s area focused between the College of Education and the central mall. Be sure to let families in your school know about the festival and encourage your students to attend and hear their favorite authors. All of the authors will be autographing and bookstores will have their books for sale. The festival is free.
