Ethics/Human Subjects Review

  • There are two articles available from Burgess, R.G. (Ed.). (1989). The ethics of educational research. Social research and educational studies series. New York: Falmer Press.

  • Smith, Linda Tuhiwai (1999). Colonizing Knowledges, Ch. 3 in Decolonizing methodologies: research and indigenous peoples.  London; New York: Zed Books; New York (requested the Library to place Ch. 3 on reserve)

  • The College of Education Office of Academic Affairs maintains a website containing resources for students and faculty conducting research. The site has pages devoted to finding funding and learning about foundations and other funding sources. However, two pages in particular may be helpful in this course. Issues of ethics will arise throughout the course, however, it is likely we will address the issues more directly in the second phase, Data Collection.

  • Human Subjects Review - This page contains links to UA and Federal website concerning requirements for research involving human subjects (participants). Researchers must pass an examination indicating they understand their ethical and legal obligations to protect participants; issues include 'informed consent', risks to the health or safety of participants, etc. Click here for the UA self-study review document concerning the Human Subjects Review training process. NOTE:  This study guide contains the exam and links to documents to help you prepare. The instructions on how to submit your actual examination are in the study guide. I have asked the library to place the study guide book on reserve. Please check with the library concerning access to the book,  Planning Ethically Responsible Research, by Sieber, J.E. [Newbury Park: Sage Publications (1992)].

  • Research Support Group - This page is designed to walk you through the steps of preparing a proposal for funding research. Even if you have no immediate plans to do so, it might be helpful to become familiar with the process.
