In the Field...

 

Your coursework includes field experiences to provide you with opportunities to apply the knowledge you gain in the classroom to your work with students.

Observation, Practicum, and Internship Handbook for SERP 575, SERP 594, and SERP 593.

Practicum and Internship Experiences

First Semester: SERP 575 Practicum (1 credit)
Students complete formal observations of orientation and mobility instructors who are teaching children and adults with visual impairments.

Second Semester: SERP 594 Orientation and Mobility Practicum (3 credits)
Students spend a minimum of 100 hours observing and assist the Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) instructor where appropriate.

Third Semester: SERP 593 Internship (7 credits)
Students spend a minimum of 250 hours teaching in a supervised internship setting with supervision by a COMS. They demonstrate the knowledge and skills to carry out all aspects of the role of a COMS, as defined in the certification standards of ACVREP.
