This program has a two-part comprehensive exam.

Part A consists of

  1. A case study of a student with visual impairment for which the master's candidate prepares written responses.
  2. An oral presentation based on the case study which is divided into two parts: (1) an inservice and (2) a question and answer period.
Part B consists of
  1. Transcribing print to braille--1 page of junior high level reading material into braille
  2. Transcribing one page of braille into print
  3. Completing an exam on special formats consisting of transcribing 8-12 word problems and formulas in such formats as Nemeth code or print

Students enrolled in braille courses (SERP 523a and SERP 523b) may choose to take the literary proficiency exam with a braille contraction sheet and a standard dictionary for checking syllabication. If a passing score is achieved, then Item 1 is waived.
